Recruiting Report: Mason Harrell (2018)
For those in Oklahoma who cover or watch high school hoops closely it was baffling how Mason Harrell held no Division I offers with the production he has had over his career. A state championship, Super 5 Player of the Year and ranked in the top five of the Oklahoma 2018 Class. The accolades go on and on when it comes to Harrell, but until yesterday Harrell had not received a Division I offer.
Binghamton University in New York changed that offering Harrell on Tuesday. Harrell calls it all a blessing.
“It feels great,” said Harrell. “Just from going to having no D1 recruitment to gettting calls almost everyday is just a blessing.”
The biggest knock for quite sometime on Harrell is his size at 5’8. But over his time on the NIKE EYBL last year and the Adidas Circuit this year Harrell has proved he can play against elite taller competition. Harrell plays with a chip on his shoulder.
“I feel like I have to prove something every time I play that’s just how I am,” said Harrell. “Playing with a chip on my shoulder is something I’ve always done since I was young, ”
Harrell hears the critics around him, but that just motivates him more.
“Having critics and hearing that just motivates me even more,” said Harrell. “I get to prove a lot of people wrong and show them size doesn’t matter. Every coach I’ve talked to told me they don’t mind me being small because my game makes up for it so critics are just motivation. But at the same time I think I give a lot of younger kids that have talked to me hope. They see you don’t have to be a certain height to be successful and they can relate to me. That makes me go a lot of times.”
Harrell is a special talent with an extremely high basketball IQ, great instincts, true Point Guard with a great scoring touch. Binghamton likely won’t be the last Division I school to offer Harrell. Harrell will never forget the phone call with Binghampton and will always remember his first offer.
Other schools that have reached out to Harrell include South Carolina, Mercer, Wright State, Abilene Christian, Rice and Boise State.
