PWP 17U UAA Indy Evaluations
PWP 17U had a tough weekend in Indy this past weekend going 0-4. The record is not indicative of their talent level throughout the team. They have several players who will take be featured at the Division I level. Prep Hoops did a full evaluation of each player on the PWP 17U squad.
Keyshawn Embery 2018 Combo Guard
He shot the ball okay by his standards for the weekend. Embery is a top 150 Guard in the nation who is best fit for the two guard spot at 6’3. Embery was persistent for PWP this weekend. He is explosive to the rim with a good finish. He has a long wingspan that makes him tough to score on defensively. When Embery is on it is an impressive offensive show. Two areas Embery can look to improve are his three-point shot and limiting turnovers. Embery has garnered a lot of minutes with PWP at the Point Guard spot, which has put him in a tough spot at times with opponents throwing double teams at him. Embery is the highest projected prospect on the PWP 17U roster. He is ranked nationally by several publications just outside the top 100. Colleges recruiting Embery range from the Mid Major plus level to High Major.
Trey Hopkins 2018 Wing
Hopkins is a freak athlete on the Wing at 6’4. On the PWP 17U squad Hopkins plays at the two or the three. This weekend Hopkins had a solid showing scoring the ball in Indy. He is a scorer from the Wing from all three levels. When he is at his best Hopkins is driving to the hoop or spotting up for an open three-pointer. A part of Hopkins game he could improve is his shot selection. Hopkins recruitment has been up and down. Several Mid Majors have extended offers with High Majors showing interest.
Dawson Carper 2018 Post
Carper is a 7′ in the Post out of Colorado. He had a tough time this weekend handling quicker, faster bigs from other teams around the country. Carper provides PWP 17U with a big body inside that can a presence inside. He must improve his footwork, quickness and continue to develop his offensive game on the court. The size of Carper will be attractive to many schools. He projects to the Division II to JUCO level.
Jaycson Bereal 2018 Wing
At 6’7 with super bounce Bereal has athleticism that colleges really covet. The length of Bereal allows him to be an effective defender at making opponents adjust shots or have them blocked. He is pretty efficient at scoring the basketball. Bereal could work to be a better rebounder with his size at 6’7. One area Bereal has improved upon over the past year is his jump shot, which is a part of his game that if it continues to improve could vault him to another level. The athleticism Bereal possess make him a prime prospect that is raw in some facets of the game, but is full of potential. Bereal is getting a lot of Mid Major interest this spring.
Camden Patterson 2018 Forward
Patterson is tall with a long wingspan at 6’11 in the paint. He is actively learning the game better as the Post for PWP on the UA Circuit. Patterson has nice touch on his jumper for mid-range. He could look to continue to add more weight and toughness in the paint. The upside to Patterson is that he is very raw and you can see the potential is there at 6’11. Patterson is receiving Low to Mid Major looks this spring.
Caleb Huffman 2018 Point Guard
Huffman played very sporadic this weekend in Indy for PWP. Coming off the bench at the Point Guard spot Huffman is very athletically gifted. He makes plays that have you in awe, but has to learn to limit his mistakes that sometimes overshadow his good plays. If Huffman can work to become a Point Guard that handles the ball better with less turnovers it will take his game to the next level. Huffman excelled at getting to the basket with his speed and he does a great job of using his athleticism to finish in traffic. The three-point shot of Huffman is enough to make defenders respect his shot, which also makes him harder to guard. Huffman holds a couple Low to Mid Major Division I offers.
Tauriawn Knight 2018 Point Guard
Knight played solid for PWP this weekend with a strong handle of the basketball. His game is not super flashy, but he is very fundamental and gets things done on both ends of the floor. One of the things I love about Knight’s game is he knows his role and plays to his strengths. Knight has a strong drive to the basket with a good finish, even in traffic. He could take his game to another level with improvement in his three-point shooting abilities. Knight is hearing from several Low Major Division I programs to Division II schools.
David Ward 2018 Wing
Ward is a very intriguing Wing at 6’6 with a college ready body. He still needs to continue to tone his body and keep building his strength, but he already is way ahead of many players in body strength. Ward had an up and down weekend scoring the ball for PWP in Indy. He shoots the cover off the ball from three-point range. The biggest thing with Ward is consistency. He has to work to be more of a consistent player to take his game to another level. The potential to succeed is there for Ward to be a Low to Mid Major prospect at the next level.
Jon Matthews 2018 Point Guard
Matthews is an undersized Point Guard at 5’7 that brings grittiness and toughness to the floor. He played hard in Indy. Size goes against Matthews when it comes to the national level, as the players are bigger, faster and stronger. Matthews cannot control that, but can continue to work on the things that he can. The biggest area offensively Matthews can improve are his jumper to make teams guard him closer. Matthews is receiving heavy Division II interest.
