Smith looks to build off big weekend
Julian Smith is one of the top players in the Oklahoma 2019 Class. He is beginning to find his niche on the Team Griffin 16U squad at the Point Guard spot. There are times Smith plays at the 1, which will be his position in his college, but there are also times were Smith uses his jumper and plays at the 2.
This past weekend Smith dominated at the MADE Hoops event in Arkansas helping Team Griffin to a runner up finish with a loss coming in the finals to Team Penny. Smith took over games with his scoring talents for Team Griffin. Smith credited his teammates and the coaching staff for his breakout performance in Arkansas.
“My team my coach they believe in me, they trust me,” said Smith. “I trust them. We all have a type of bond can’t nobody break and that’s what makes us so good.”
Smith is staying humble knowing he still has things to work on in his game. The skill set of Smith is far from complete, which is a scary thought when you analyze the game of Smith. He has a chance to be a nationally ranked player by the end of his high school career. One thing Smith is trying to focus on is to mature into a team leader for Team Griffin.
“I feel like I need to work on everything and anything you can think of in basketball,” said Smith. “You can never perfect something it’s always a way to get better, but mostly on being more of a team leader, making sure everything is going well for my team.”
Smith has two big goals this summer. One personal and one team goal.
“I have two goals this summer, one to break the top 25 national rankings,” said Smith. “But my main goal is winning the Nike Peach Jam. Nothing is better than doing that in your high school career.”
This weekend Smith who is still searching for his first Division I offer will look to impress coaches. At 5’11 Smith has an excellent jumper with the ability to create off the bounce. He still has room for improvement across the board. Defense is an area Smith will look to step up his game. When Smith is bringing energy non-stop on both ends of the floor he is a special talent. Smith and Team Griffin will be at the H-Town Classic this weekend to open the first live period.
