Recruiting Report: Virgil Lackey (2017)
This article was posted at 3:04pm EST. Moments after, at 3:11pm, Virgil Lackey informed us that he will continue his career at Labette Community College. While this article reads as if Lackey is undecided, which he was during our interview yesterday afternoon, he is no longer on the fence and has finalized his decision.
Virgil Lackey (2017), a 6’7” forward from Cincinnati Taft, has completed his high school career; and it seems the next step will be Junior College (JUCO).
Currently, Labette Community College (KA) is the only school to offer Lackey a scholarship. In turn, Lackey is also very interested in the program.
“I like they’re tempo. I like that they got a pretty back-court too,” Lackey said.
Lackey isn’t turned off by the location, saying that he’s very willing to move far away from the Queen City for college.
“I’m looking for a place to have a fast pace, how Taft was. It was all fast and downhill,” Lackey said.
Lackey also mentioned that a few out-of-state JUCOs are in contact with him.
The fast-pace that Lackey is seeking fits his personal playing style. At 6’7”, he gets up and down the court very quickly. The foot-speed he possesses also allows him to make up ground in the half-court, as he routinely blocks shots from the help side.
“My best skill is rebounding and blocking shots,” Lackey said.
He also told PHO that he can defend any position, something we saw in person against Dayton Carroll in the postseason this year.
On the offensive end, Lackey cleans up a lot of misses and racks up points on put-backs. He battles for position, and his athleticism takes him to the ball once he finds himself around the rim.
He hopes to build upon his athleticism this off-season, as he’s running track and focused on being in the weight room.
Lackey carries a 2.54 GPA and a 19 ACT score.
