Recruiting Report: Seybian Sims (2018)
If Iowa City West stretch-forward Seybian Sims was on any other team in the state, he’d likely have been a starter.
As it was, he exchanged those would-be minutes for a state title ring while playing with Iowa’s most talented bunch. Sims came off the bench for the Trojans and averaged 6.2 points and 4.0 rebounds per contest, proving to be a critical piece to their 4A state title run.
Surprisingly, even after such an impact role with the Trojans, Sims says he’s seen so recruitment come his way.
“Honestly, not a lot (of recruitment), if any have come up after this year. So me and my family are just going to start sending out some more emails to different coaches,” said the rangy 6-foot-7 post, who says he’ll be happy with any interest that might come his way this summer.
“Of course everyone wants to go D1, and personally I would put myself somewhere in the D2 range, JuCo if I have to. I’d honestly like to play in the D2 or D3 area, but any schools interested in me would be great.”
As he continues on his hoops journey, Sims says that working to become a more versatile threat is still a point of emphasis for him.
“My job was to get rebounds and putbacks, I only shot five 3s this season so I really didn’t play too much outside of the paint. Patrick (McCaffery), Connor (McCaffery) and Devontae (Lane) would feed me the ball inside and that’s how I got all my points,” he said.
“At West I was working a lot more with my under the basket post-moves and rebounding. And what I’m working on for myself and with AAU is more shooting stuff and passing, more of a guard skill-set to try and make me more versatile.”
He’ll hone those perimeter skills while playing with one of the state’s best teams this spring and summer, Iowa Dynasty 17U.
Sims’ top goal is to get as much attention from colleges as possible for he and his teammates.
“Every 17U that wants to go to college is looking for some type of recruitment during their AAU season, and that’s what I’m looking for too,” said Sims. “I’m just wanting to get some eyes open on me and my teammates on Dynasty too.”
