Recruiting Report: Matthew Balanc (2018)
Springbrook High School is known for being a basketball powerhouse in the state of Maryland. Their 13-13 record from this season wouldn’t indicate so, but that won’t last for long considering they return the majority of their roster next season.
Their top returner is 2018 guard Matthew Balanc. The 6’3 point guard has plenty to offer Division I programs and with the AAU season just starting up, there’s a good chance he’ll pick up a few offers before the summer is over.

Balanc led Springbrook this season averaging 20.4 points, 4.5 assists, three rebounds, and 2.5 steals per game. He thrives getting out in the open floor where his athleticism can be on full display. The most impressive thing about Balanc his how quickly he can explode to the basket. There were plenty of times this season he’d be in full sprint with the ball and before you know it, he’s throwing down a dunk that makes the crowd explode.
He uses a quick first step off the catch to attack driving lanes. When he’s not finishing with a dunk, Balanc has nice touch around the basket and a good feel to initiate contact to force the refs to call a foul. Balanc was an 80 percent free-throw shooter this season.
After talking with both Balanc and director of Mis Atlantic Select (his AAU team), there are a few parts of his game he wants to focus on polishing before his senior campaign. One specific thing is making sure he stays low at all times after making a move off the dribble or catch. He has a habit of straightening up during these situations, but Balanc is fully aware and Lee told me he is working vigorously in training sessions.
Balanc doesn’t hold any offers as of yet, but is gaining interest from multiple Division I schools. He has an unofficial visit to Mount St. Mary’s this weekend.
Balanc has a 3.0 cumulative GPA. In terms of specifics of what he’s looking for in a college, location isn’t an issue. He just wants an opportunity to play and become the best player he possibly can.
