Recruiting Report: Makhel Mitchell (2019)
Makhel Mitchell has come a long way since his freshman year, and is becoming more dominant each time he hits the floor. The 6’9 big man from Washington, D.C., averaged 3.3 blocks per game with the D.C. Blue Devils at UAA Session 1 in New York last weekend, and has seen his recruitment pick up since last weekend.
“I’m an inside out layer,” Mitchell replied when asked to describe his playing style. “Pass the ball. Not selfish. Rebound well. Block shots well. Score in the paint well. Trying to expand my game out to the perimeter. Just work hard.”
And work hard is exactly what Mitchell has done. After an injury riddled freshman year at Bishop McNamara, Mitchell began coming into his own as a sophomore. We saw his emergence begin at the BSN Summer League, and his progression has continued over the last eight months.
“Getting my body toned, getting stronger, getting my legs stronger, and getting back in shape since injury has been what I’ve worked on the most.”
Mitchell is a physical forward who is very good with his drop step, and finishes well through contact in the paint. He visited Maryland last week, and picked up an offer from the Terps. Georgetown, Penn State, Virginia Tech, Rutgers, and Cincinnati have also offered the sophomore big man.
“I need to continue to work on getting my body right,” said Mitchell about his current areas of focus. “Conditioning. Running the floor. Dominating in the paint.”
Mitchell mentioned that the atmosphere would be important for him at whatever school he chooses. What can he bring to a college program?
“A good teammate who’s coachable. Scoring. I can rebound well. I’m physical.”
