Recruiting Report: Carter Frey (2018)
Valley junior Carter Frey was one in a stable of talented guards this past season to play with the Tigers, and was key to their state runner-up finish.
Though he would have likely started on most other 4A teams in Iowa, Frey’s role was to come off the bench and give his team a spark — he averaged 5.2 points per game.
“My role this year was to come off the bench when the starters needed a break, and try and fill up the stat sheet when I could,” said Frey. “I just needed to play my role and play to the best of my ability. I thought overall this year we played well as a team, we bonded together and that’s how we had our success.”
This summer will be especially critical for Frey, and his exposure with Team Iowa 17U will help immensely with his recruitment, which, right now, is in its beginning stages.
“I’ve got a couple letters from a couple D2s and D3s, and one D1 college out of North Carolina (Elon) has sent mail,” said Frey.
“Truman State and North Dakota State have been sending mail.”
A quick and skilled off-guard, Frey is a very capable shooter, especially from mid-range, and says he’s been working most on staying aware defensively.
“I’ve been really working on getting to the basket and shooting off the dribble, and making sure I’m where I need to be on defense,” said Frey, who defined his role with Valley this past season.
So far this spring, Frey — Iowa’s 57th-ranked 2018 — has been playing with a group of Valley guys in grassroots tournaments. He’ll play with pals Hunter Strait (Ankeny Centennial) and Grant Arnold (Southeast Polk) on Teal Iowa later this summer.
“I’m really just looking forward to getting some more exposure and just playing with guys that I love to play with. Hunter is a really good point guard who distributes well, and Grant is fun to play with because he’s one of my best buddies,” said Frey.
“For the summer I’m just focused on getting a D2 scholarship, and just trying to play somewhere at the highest level.”
