Prospect Spotlight: Willie Guy (2019)
Cedar Rapids Jefferson sophomore guard Willie Guy is coming off the heels of a successful sophomore season, where he turned some heads with nice scoring and tremendous shooting.
The 5-foot-11 sharpshooter averaged 12.4 points per game this past winter, and connected on 55 3s at a 44 percent clip.
Guy, though, is a baseball standout too, and will not play grassroots ball this spring and summer. Still, he says basketball is something he could see himself pursuing at the next level.
“I plan to get in the gym on my own time, anytime that I can,” said Guy. “I definitely want to make basketball one of my top priorities, probably the top. And I definitely want to play college basketball.”
Because senior Royshawn Webb was the point guard, Guy was playing off the ball most of his sophomore season. But he sites his vision and passing as one of his best strengths and is a capable point guard himself.
“I like to think I have pretty good vision, and I pass the ball pretty well. I can shoot it pretty well too, and I feel like I can do whatever the coach needs me to do,” said Guy.
“I thought throughout the season I played pretty well; I shot the ball well. I think I can improve on my free-throws, I can definitely improve on those. I want to cut down my turnovers and then get to the hoop more.”
With the J-Hawks’ top two scorers, Webb and Kane Kramer, graduating this year, it will be Guy’s team to run next season as a junior.
“My role next year will be to be the main scorer and to get everyone involved,” said Guy. “And trying to do as much as I can to make sure our team can be as successful as possible.”
