Prospect Spotlight: Thomas Faber (2019)
It’s rare that underclassmen get the opportunity to play meaningful varsity minutes at Dowling Catholic.
And though 6-foot-3 (with plenty of growth potential) combo-guard Thomas Faber would have cracked the starting lineup for many other varsity squads in the state, he spent his sophomore season cutting his teeth with the Maroons sophomore squad.
This summer he’ll again play with All Iowa Attacks’ top squad, where he’ll prepare himself for a certain impact role with the varsity squad next season, and hopefully pick up some recruitment in the process.
“It’s (recruitment) always on my mind. I haven’t really had any contact myself, but I know some schools have been talking to Lefty (Moore) about me,” said Faber. “I know Nebraska-Omaha wants me to come back for their elite camp this summer, so I think I’ll do that and some other ones too.”
His grassroots team will be playing in several tournaments throughout the spring and summer, and some of them will be high profile.
“When we go to those big tournaments I’m just going to play my game and not really worry about the college coaches, and I think the recruitment will take care of itself,” said Faber.
“And by the end of the year I’m thinking I’ll have some more interest, and maybe some offers will happen.”
With great size and a developed skill-set, Faber can do a lot of things on the court to help his team win. He mentioned to PHIA what it is he’s been working to improve most since last summer.
“Since last summer I’ve really been working on my handle and my strength, and trying to be stronger and getting to the rim more. I’m looking to create my shot more and not relying on someone else to get a shot for me,” said Faber, who says his sophomore season went well.
“This season was good, I think we were 18-2. My role was to play the one or the two, and I was mainly the scoring guard. Me and Jack (Keough) just tried to make our teammates better, and ourselves.”
One of the top priorities this offseason is prepare himself for an impact role with Dowling next season.
“I’m going to be working on my vertical and getting stronger and quicker,” said Faber. “My role next year will be the two or three guard. Sam (Ingoli) will be the main distributor, and I’ll just have to be ready to shoot because the defenses will be focused on him, and I’ll be ready to knock down some shots.”
