Prospect Spotlight: Jack Keough (2019)
Though 6-foot 2 point guard Jack Keough is without a doubt one of 2019’s best point guards, it seems that football is what he’ll likely excel at moving forward.
The skilled and athletic lead guard will still star with the Dowling varsity the next two seasons. But his role as outside linebacker on the gridiron may garner him the scholarships.
“This summer I’m not going to play AAU, I have a bunch of football camps that I’ve signed up for like Iowa, Iowa State, Penn State and a couple combines,” said Keough.
“I probably will pursue football in college, I feel like I’m better at that.”
He added: “I’m still open to basketball, it’s just at this point I’m better at football. But I’m still open to pursuing basketball, I’m just seeing if I can get better and get noticed.”
This past winter, Keough — Iowa’s 43rd-ranked 2019 — starred with the Maroons’ sophomore squad, and practiced up with the varsity for much of the season.
“My role on the sophomore team was to just facilitate and get to the basket when I can. My coaches know that’s my strong suit, is getting my teammates involved. And being a bigger guard I had a pretty good chance of out-rebounding other guards,” said Keough, who mentioned what his role might be next season as a junior.
“He (Dowling coach Mark O’Connor) expects me to have a big role and it will depend a lot on what I do this spring and summer and how much my jump-shot can expand. He said I’ll have a good chance to earn a good solid starting spot.”
In addition to working on his jumper, Keough will be a guy who can facilitate and get teammates involved.
“I’ve mostly been working on my jump-shot; I’ve always been good at getting to the lane and getting my teammates involved, that’s probably my best strength,” he said. ‘And I consider myself a pretty good on-ball defender. So recently I’ve been working on my mid-range jumper and extending that out to the 3.”
