The Outlet: Oklahoma AAU Observations
The Outlet is a weekly column which dissects different topics regarding high school hoops in Oklahoma. This week we will touch on some local AAU teams and players that will benefit from the summer circuit.
Who is the best 17U team in Oklahoma?
Oklahoma PWP is loaded with tons of the top talent in the 2018 class. From Keyshawn Embery and Trey Hopkins, PWP has a team full of mark key names. It will be interesting to see how all of their local talent will do on the Under Armour circuit.
What is an underrated 17U program that impressed so far?
Tulsa Hawks has some underrated players in the 2018 class including Carson Calavan and Layton Hartloff. They the game with great chemistry and they have a ton of shooters. They showed they could play with anybody at the PrepHoops Route 66 Kickoff.
Who has the best 16U team in the state?
Team Griffin 16U is loaded from top to bottom but especially with guards. They have the two best sophomores in the state in Kobe Burgess and Julian Smith. They make a great duo because they are so different.
Smith is a stocky guard who can fill it up from three point range and has an excellent feel for creative layups around the rim. Burgess on the other hand, is a dynamic athlete who uses his quickness to get into passing lanes and cause chaos for the opposition defensively.
Team Griffin 16U have surrounded this excellent guard duo with rangy athletes like Drew Tennial and Ben Smith.
There doesn’t seem to be another team with this much talent from top to bottom.
Which player in the 2018 class will blow up during the AAU circuit?
Colt Savage of Gym Time Hoops holds multiple offers from local Division II’s but currently hasn’t got much interest outside of the state. Savage is a 6’5 guard who is skilled and has the great ability to get to the rim. The Sand Springs guard is a legit D2 prospect to low major Division I who will get the exposure this summer that his talent deserves.
Savage had a great junior year but we fully expect him to carry that momentum into the AAU season and come out the other side with plenty of offers.
Which player(s) in the 2019 class will blow up during the AAU circuit?
Kalib Boone recently received an offer from Tulsa but that is just the start for the talented big out of Tulsa Memorial. The Boone’s (including Keylan) are as talented of a duo as the state of Oklahoma has seen in a long time.
College coaches drool over long rangy athletes like Kalib and Keylan. Once coaches are able to see these two and their beaming potential, offers will roll in.
