Recruiting Report: LJ Owens (2018)
LJ Owens, a class of 2018 guard from the Severn School, is set for an uptick in recruitment after an impressive junior campaign. The Annapolis native went toe-to-toe with some of the best guards in the MIAA this year, and is looking forward to doing high level competition on the UAA this spring and summer with the DC Blue Devils.
“I’ve been playing since age 3 or 4,” said Owens, who scored 25 against Mount Saint Joseph in a fantastic early season matchup which saw him go head-to-head with Maryland commit Darryl Morsell. “I used to work out with my dad all the time when I was younger, and played with an older team.”
Smooth would be a good word to describe Owens’ game. He’s a sharpshooter with good size, and is effective at coming off screens or reading ball screens.
“Definitely probably my shooting,” said Owens about the most improved part of his game. “I’ve been working on that a lot. Getting reps up. I think my mid-range is underrated. I use that a lot.”
Owens knows that he will need to continue polishing his ball handling skills. He is a good enough passer to play the point, but he admittedly will need to continue to get stronger with the ball.
“I had a 3.4 last quarter, and made the honor roll,” said Owens about his academic status. “I have a Kansas State offer. I am receiving interest from Virginia Tech, George Mason, Davidson, Towson, Rice, and LA Tech among others.”
What can college programs expect from Owens at the next level?
“A good feel for the game. Leadership. Obviously shooting. Just a good guard. Involved with the team.”
