Prospect Spotlight: Elijah Bowens (2018)
Elijah Bowens was the maestro for a 26-5 Maret team this year, and is poised to carry the positive momentum he gained during the high school season into the AAU campaign with Virginia Elite.
“From the time I was born I’ve just always had a basketball in my hand,” said Bowens about his playing experience. “I just loved it.”
Bowens was born in San Antonio, Texas, but has been in the DC Metro are for a while now. He started every game at the point for Frogs Head Coach Chuck Driesell, and led the team in assists while finishing second in made threes and scoring.
“I feel like I can do it all. That’s what I work on. Just doing everything. Passing. Scoring,” Bowens said about his playing style. “Running the team. Controlling everything that’s on the court.”
Bowens admittedly needs to continue to get better at leading, and being more vocal. He understands how valuable it is for the point guard to be considered a leader.
“I know I’ve been more of a show it kind of guy, but I think I need to work on my talking,” Bowens stated.
Maret is considered one of the top academic schools in the country. Bowens is doing as well, if not better in the classroom as he is on the court. What’s one thing Bowens does on the court that most people might not realize?
“A lot of point guards don’t really know how to do control the pace,”explained Bowens. “That’s something I like to learn and something that I like to show.”
What can a coach interested in recruiting Bowens expect from him at a college program?
“A point guard. I think. A point guard that can score. That can pass. Be an extension to the coach.”
