Evaluation
Carson Guthrie has wonderful size for an aspiring college guard. He can handle well on the perimeter. Guthrie is tough enough to absorb contact and finish. His on-court mental and physical toughness project favorably beyond high school.
The biggest worry with taller guards is always lateral mobility (defense). Can they stop a quick college-bound guard from getting into the lane?
With Guthrie the current answer is, ‘not yet.’ He has the tenacity to work through high screens and the footwork to slide. AAU season with Pocket City 16u will help test him against quicker opponents than he saw this winter.
Like all high school athletes, Guthrie needs to add muscle. He will be capable of holding his ground defensively with just a few more months of lower body work. The inherent quickness and grit is there.
In 23 games, Carson finished the season with 15.1 ppg ,7.2 rpg.
He shot 37.7% from beyond the arc and converted 69% of his free throws. During his sophomore season, Carson Guthrie finished off 56.2% of the shots he took.
The devoted student (3.7 GPA) utilizes his sharp mind on the court too. He sees passing lanes before they develop. Guthrie is an accomplished passer and routinely set up his teammates for easy buckets (3.1 apg).
The scoring guard was able to record double-doubles multiple times. In a win against Calloway County in early January, Guthrie hauled down 11 rebounds while scoring 18 points.
