What We Learned: Kentucky State Tournament ‘Elite 8’
Kentucky’s ‘Sweet Sixteen’ has now been narrowed to the ‘Final Four’ teams. The ‘Elite 8’ gave us a better glimpse as to who is geared up and ready to make a run at this thing. Prep Hoops Kentucky takes a look at what we learned from last night’s ‘Elite 8’ action.
Bowling Green is Really, Really Good
I said the same thing about Scott County in our previous “What We Learned” state tournament post. I was right, but the Purples of Bowing Green proved to be as good and better in this particular game. Bowling Green out played the Cardinals, while Scott County battled to keep it close the majority of the game – before Bowling Green ran away with it late, winning 68-53.
Bowling Green had been ranked #2 in the state behind Scott County. Prior to this game, Scott County had only lost to one in-state season all year. “They were the best team we’ve played all year,” said Scott County head coach Billy Hicks.
Jake Ohmer is a Baller (Part: II)
After scoring 41 points and grabbing 17 rebounds in the first round of play, Ohmer followed it up with 32 and 10 against Perry County Central in the state quarterfinals. Ohmer is putting on a show, one that hasn’t been seen at the state tournament since Chris Lofton in the early 2000’s. Lofton, as you may know, went on to have a pretty swell career at the University of Tennessee. Scott defeated PCC 74-52.
73 points and 27 rebounds in two games. Whoa.
Cooper Continues to Puts on the Defensive Clamps
Coming into their quarterfinal game against Collins, Cooper was holding teams to 34 points per game. The Jags held Collins to 33 in this one, winning 58-33.
4th Time Not the Charm for Ballard Against Fern Creek
The two teams met for the fourth time this season, with Fern Creek creating the same outcome. It was a close one, however. Ballard would fall 55-52.
