Island leads Calumet to the Class B Gold Ball
The name Riley Island was unfamiliar to most media members and coaches until this weekend. Island dominated the Class B state tournament posting a triple double, 40 points game and over 100 points for the three day stretch. If you follow Prep Hoops you would have heard of Island this summer winning the Prep Hoops Finale.
So who is Island?
Riley Island is a 2018 6′ Combo Guard with a great shooting stroke from behind the arc. He has great talent at scoring the ball and over the past year has really developed his floor vision allowing him to become a better passer.
The state championship victory meant a lot to Island. It is a moment he will never forget with his teammates and coaches.
“It was unbelievable at the moment I couldn’t describe it,” said Island.”It is something I’ve dreamed about since the 6th grade. It was huge.”
Island projects to the Division II level with his ability to score the basketball. The pure jumper of Island will make him a key recruit for many small colleges over the next year. Island will be working hard to prove to college coaches this summer that he is a player that can live up to standards at the next level. Often, small town players get questioned if they can produce at the next level. Island is ready to prove any doubters wrong.
“I just look at as people overlook me and doubt me,” said Island. “I just play my game and love to prove people wrong.”
The basketball community in Oklahoma will not forget Island. Look for Island to have a big summer on the grassroots circuit. Expect, Calumet and Island to be back competing for the Class B Gold Ball next year.
This summer Island will play with Oklahoma Respect.
