The Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches (KABC) released their list of each regions player of the year at the end of February. The list covers all 16 regions of the state and PHKY has your recap of each one, as well as other top performers who stood out during the 2016-2017 Kentucky high school basketball season.
4th Region Player of the Year :
Tavin Lovan, Franklin-Simpson (2017) *(4th Region POY came down to a three-way tie between Lovan, Pedro Bradshaw, and Terry Taylor. During an on-line poll, Lovan was voted unanimously as Prep Hoops Kentucky POY. So in this instance, Lovan earns PHKY’s 4th Region Player of the Year).
Lovan lit up the stat book this year, averaging 23.6 points per game and 9.4 rebounds. On most nights, you would also see him with a handful of assists, blocks, and steals. Lovan will eventually make a D1 program very happy with his skill and versatility.
OTHER TOP REGION PERFORMERS:
Pedro Bradshaw, Russellville (2017)
Part of the 4th Region’s three-way tie for POY, Bradshaw was also a Kentucky Mr. Basketball candidate. Averaging 22.5 points and 13.3 rebounds per game, Bradshaw has committed to play at Belmont University next season.
Terry Taylor, Bowling Green (2017)
Leading Bowling Green to a 36-2 record and to a Kentucky state championship, Taylor averaged 17.4 points and 12.1 rebounds per game. During the state tournament, Taylor recorded a total of 82 points and 40 rebounds in four games. He will play his college ball at Austin Peay.
Zion Harmon, Bowling Green (2021)
Only an 8th grader, Harmon was a key player in Bowling Green’s championship run playing combo guard. He averaged 16.8 points per game during the regular season. He also averaged 17 a game during the Kentucky state tournament, seemingly impossible to stay in front of.
Jared Coomer, Barren County (2018)
Coomer is flying under the radar in Kentucky’s 2018 class, getting interest from all levels of college basketball. At 6’6, Coomer is able to play inside and out. He averaged 15.5 points and 7.5 rebounds this season.
Skyelar Potter, Warren Central (2018)
Potter does it all at the guard position. At 6’3, he averaged 20.2 points and 11.8 rebounds on the year. He has been shown interest from low/mid major D1’s.
