3rd Region POY and Other Top Region Performers
The Kentucky Association of Basketball Coaches (KABC) released their list of each regions player of the year at the end of February. The list covers all 16 regions of the state and PHKY has your recap of each one, as well as other top performers who stood out during the 2016-2017 Kentucky high school basketball season.
3rd Region Player of the Year :
Zach Hopewell, Apollo (2017)
Hopewell averaged 20.5 points per game and 4.5 rebounds on the season while leading Apollo to a 22-7 overall record. Apollo saw their season end in a tough out in the first round of the 9th District tournament, a loss in overtime to Daviess County. Apollo had defeated Daviess twice during the regular season.
OTHER TOP REGION PERFORMERS:
Brenden Lewis, Hancock County (2017)
The senior forward helped lead Hancock County to the best record in the 3rd region at 27-5 overall and 14-4 against region opponents. Averaging 16.2 points per game, Lewis dropped 29 in the 11th District championship game, awarding Hancock County the district championship trophy.
James Baker, Meade County (2017)
Injured during most of the season, Baker averaged 15.8 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. He made is way back into the lineup in enough time to help lead the Green Wave to the Kentucky state tournament with a regional championship win over Daviess County.
Blake Boswell, Daviess County (2018)
Boswell averaged 14.1 points while shooting 47% from the field during his junior campaign. The guard helped lead Daviess County to an overall record of 21-13, including a trip to the regional championship game.
Chesney Weick, Meade County (2019)
Weick averaged 8 points per game during the regular season, but after senior James Baker fell to injury and tournament time came around, Weick turned it up a notch. Averaging 10 a game during district and region play, Weick scored 16 in the region final and 15 during the Kentuky state tournament, leading the Green Wave in scoring.
