Mason Harrell took over for Carl Albert as he has all season manning the Point Guard spot the best out of any player in Class 5A. With the ball in the hands of Harrell, Carl Albert battled against Shawnee back and forth all night long.
The offensive attack for Shawnee was spread out between their starting five. Carson Meier 6’5 2018 Wing had some impressive moments throughout the night ending with, 16 points. Meier didn’t have the best night shooting the basketball, but managed to still be efficient from the floor.
Shawnee led early in the second half by as many as 7, but the lead quickly evaporated with Harrell nabbing back to back steals. Trey Hopkins was key in knocking down a pair of huge three-pointers in the second half. The duo of Harrell and Hopkins proved to be to much for Shawnee knocking them off, 81-76. Harrell went for 36, Hopkins was right behind him with an important 24 points.
In the end the difference was having Harrell to handle the basketball and not turn it over. Harrell on both ends of the floor was fantastic. He nabbed 5 steals in the victory.
“The key to the win last night was just to grind it out all four quarters,” said Harrell. “Playing on the road in a tough environment we knew things were not all going to go our way so we just stayed with it and got the win.”
Harrell was on fire from the second his first three-pointer went through in net in the opening quarter. He says he just needs to see one go in to get going.
“I have been scoring the ball at a high level this year and that is what my team needs me to do,” said Harrell. “I feel like once one shot goes in I am on a roll for the rest of the game.”
Hopkins huge three-point baskets in the second half helped to put away Shawnee. The game was called very close by the referees with both teams dealing with foul trouble. Hopkins feels this game will prepare them for the playoffs.
“It really gets our mindset ready for the playoffs,” said Hopkins. “It gets us prepared for us mentally knowing we can’t going to go into games thinking we are going to blow teams out. We are going to get everybody best.”
Harrell and Hopkins might be the best duo in the state of Oklahoma. Both are 2018 prospects with a chance to end up at the Division I level. Harrell projects to the Low Major Division I level. Hopkins project to the High Major Division I level.
