Continue ReadingIt appeared as if the west would dominate the east in basketball for the second consecutive year. Edmond North has a loaded team with talent at the top on the west. But the West has more depth with Midwest City, Putnam City North, Norman North, Putnam City West, Westmoore and the list continues. The east has one team that had a chance to distance itself this weekend from the pack, Union. The Redskins did just that.
It was not always pretty, but Union found a way to win each game this weekend at the Tournament of Champions. Union defeated not only the #2 team in Class 6A Midwest City, also the #1 team Edmond North. The Union Redskins made it clear they are the top team in the state heading into the new year.
The duo of Ethan Chargois and Adrian Rodriguez in the post was lethal. Teams in Oklahoma just quite frankly do not have the line up to contend with Chargois at 6’8 and Rodriguez at 6’6. Union did something this weekend that only championship teams can do. The Redskins won a game against Midwest City when they were not playing their best basketball. They fought through the adversity of not shooting the ball well and found a way to get a victory.
Chargois is so skilled at 6’8 with a soft shooting touch. Rodriguez is not the tallest post player at 6’6, however you won’t see a player on the floor ever outplay him. The constant hustle of Rodriguez allows him to be one of the best rebounders in the state.
2018 6’4 Shooting Guard Mo Garcia is turning into a reliable consistent three-point shooter from the wing. Ahjae Johnson and N’Kiel Jamerson are two players that have stepped up and turned into nice players at the guard spots for Union.
Union is very well coached under long time head coach Rudy Garcia. He is one of the main reasons why they were able to get through this weekend undefeated. Coach Garcia and the Union Redskins now will have the target on their backs for the rest of the season. The wins for Union this weekend also help the east side of the state get more recognition. The east has several teams that are young and talented. It will be interesting to see what type of response the coaches give in the Class 6A poll this week.
One thing is not up for debate, Union is the best team in Oklahoma right now.
