MVP: Will Graham Westmoore
Graham is one of the faster guards in the state and he put that speed into action as he sliced up the Pirates defense.
Graham darted to the basket when he was given fast break opportunities. He also found his talented teammates for open shots. Graham was also a terror on the offensive glass.
Best offensive performance: Will Graham Westmoore
Graham dominated PCO’s guards. No one could stay in front of Graham who lived at the rim finishing with either hand. The Jaguars got off to a great start because Graham got a few easy baskets which got the team going.
Best defensive performance: Damoriea Vick Westmoore
To be an elite defender on the wing, you must have length, quick feet, and the ability to give great effort. Vick is everything a coach dreams of when they are trying to mold a shut down defender.
Standing at 6’4, Vick defended all five positions against the Pirates Friday night. Westmoore has a plethora of quality defenders and they are led by Vick.
Best shooter: Jaylen Gotcher Putnam City
Gotcher is probably the most talented player on the floor and he was also the best shooter. Gotcher didn’t get many opportunities against Westmoore’s stingy defense.
However, Gotcher was automatic whenever he was give a clean spot up opportunity. At 6’5 and with a quick release, Gotcher has all the tools of a great shooter which have more and more college coaches drooling.
Best energy player: Kenny Springs Westmoore
Kenny Springs was all over the floor Friday night. Springs gets overshadowed sometimes because of his high profile teammates but he cannot be replaced.
At 6’2, Springs is another long defender who gives extra effort on defense which lead to steals and breakaway layups. He understands his role as the guy who creates chaos for the opposing offense.
Mr. Versatility: Trey Palmer Westmoore
Palmer’s versatility was in full display against PCO as he played a “Lamar Odom” type of role.
Palmer was great on the glass and he showed the ability to bring the ball up the floor and to make the right play.
He also did a good job of finishing over PCO’s size. Palmer does a little bit of everything for the Jaguars.
Best slasher: Damoriea Vick Westmoore
Vick is an excellent football player and he uses that experience when driving to the basket.
Vick welcomes and appreciates contact when he gets around the basket. The 6’5 lefty showed off his ball handling skills to leave his defender.
Best player off the bench: Owen Atkinson PCO
Atkinson came off the bench and immediately made an impact by rebounding and finishing around the rim.
Atkinson tried his best to protect the rim against the consistent drives of Graham, Vick, and others but it wasn’t enough.
Best storyline going forward: PCO’s bigs/Westmoore’s defense
Westmoore has the most versatile group of defenders in the state. With four players 6’2 or taller in the starting lineup and Graham’s speed, the Jaguars have so many weapons to use defensively.
Putnam City needs improved production from Ben Jenkins and Owen Atkinson to really reach their potential. Jenkins had a solid game vs Westmoore but he needs to be more consistent for the Pirates to make a run.
