He is an all-around athlete that has the ability to compete with the best athletes at any level. Not only an athlete, he’s skilled as well. Capable of running the point, he has tight handles and solid ball control. He is comfortable both handling pressure and creating offense off the dribble. He is also a knockdown shooter from anywhere on the floor. Offensively, he can do it all.
Demetri has interest from JuCo, NAIA, and D2 teams. I believe he can play at the D1 level given perhaps just one more year of development on the defensive side of the ball.
Here’s my take on his overall game:
Strengths:
Athleticism – He’s 6’4″ and built like a football player. He has quick feet and good footwork. He can run and jump with the best of them. His combination of speed and strength will make him a tough matchup with a majority of guards, as he can out-muscle the smaller guards and blow by the bigger guards.
Shooting – Knockdown shooter. Good form, smooth shot. Looks comfortable and confident shooting from anywhere on the floor, with anyone guarding him. Can shoot both spot up as well as off the dribble. This is the strongest part of his game.
Handles – He could play the point if his team needed him too. Although he is a score-first player, his playmaking is underrated. He has the handles to protect the ball when pressured, as well as the handles to break a defender down and create a play.
Rebounding – This should be a given for any player that is an elite athlete, but it is a bit more impressive when you consider Martin is a perimeter player. He may not be a top-notch glass cleaner, but he is more than capable of grabbing strong rebounds. Every time I’ve seen him play he’s come down with at least a couple impressively strong rebounds.
Areas For Development:
Motor – This is without a doubt the biggest weakness in Martin’s game. While it is certainly understandable at a high school level, it is not acceptable to take plays off at the college level. He has a tendency to reach if he loses a step when defending, allowing his man to get by him. He is sometimes seen walking up the court and standing straight up on defense. With all this being said, it is important to note that these are only occasional throughout the course of an entire game.
Defense – Martin has the ability to be an elite, lockdown defender. However, he gambles by reaching and attempting to jump passing lanes far too much, putting himself out of position on defense. When he focuses on keeping his man in front of him, he is a menace.
