Continue ReadingSince the last time PHO spoke to 6’6” forward/wing Dominic Laravie (2017), he has added scholarship offers from the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown (PA) and Mercyhurst (PA).
The Archbishop Alter prospect spoke about his three out-of-state offers, which also includes Christian Brothers University in Tennessee.
“I’m looking to get a little bit away from home but obviously I’m not trying to go to like the west coast or something extremely far away. But, I don’t want to stay in like a 45-minute or hour radius from home,” Laravie said.
Other than location, there are other factors affecting Laravie’s decision.
“Just education, because I know that after four years basketball is likely going to come to an end. I’m going to have to go out and find a job, so somewhere that sets me up for success after college,” Laravie said. The 3.7 GPA student-athlete will decide between biology or business for a major.
In addition to those three Division II offers, Laravie has maintained communication with some other programs.
“The interest from the University of Chicago is still there. I haven’t spoken to Wheeling Jesuit in a while, but according to my coaches the interest is still there … The Findlay coach shot me a text [Friday] night before the game and that was the first time they’ve ever reached out. That’s because they had a scholarship open up and he just said he’d be at the game,” Laravie said.
By the way, the Findlay coach picked a good night to watch Laravie in action, he tallied 23 points, 14 rebounds, and 7 blocks in a win against cross-town rival Chaminade-Julienne.
When we spoke with Laravie on Saturday morning, he was excited about staying undefeated in the Greater Catholic League.
“It’s always good to beat CJ. They’re our known rivals, so it’s always good to beat them,” Laravie said of the team’s performance. He also went on to breakdown his role in the victory, “Yesterday was more of a game where I had the size advantage so I did that and took advantage.”
Laravie dominated the low-block on Friday night, but it’s likely that he will play on the wing next season. In order to make that transition, Laravie is working on his ball-handling.
Expect Laravie to wait until after the season to announce his college decision, as he plans on visiting all three schools before choosing.
