“I’m not truly decided on it yet. But I believe I should make [a decision] before we go to the tournament,” Straughter said.
If the 5’10” point guard from Canton McKinley sticks to his word then an announcement will be made within the next month. The University of Toledo and Stony Brook have expressed interest recently but, as of now, Straughter is deciding between four college programs: Walsh, Malone, Tennessee Martin, and Stetson (FL).
Straughter made it clear that he’s not leaning towards any of the options currently. However, he did mention that he’s impressed with Walsh.
“Walsh has been giving me real support throughout the season … They’ve been giving me the most support throughout the season,” Straughter said.
Like many high school seniors around the country, Straughter is basing much of his decision on comfort-level. With that being said, Walsh’s long-term effort to build a relationship might just be enough to win the Straughter sweepstakes.
“I want to go where I’m going to be the most comfortable and play, either Division I or Division II. Just knowing where I’m going to develop most as a player. Then maybe I can make a career out of it, go overseas or something. If not, I want to go where I can get the best education so I can get in the work-field,” Straugher said.
As for his senior season, Straughter has the Canton McKinley at an 11-6 record. The floor general believes the next step in his game involves remain poise in tight games and improving as a finisher.
It is apparent, given his professional basketball aspirations, that he will continue improving throughout college —a credit to his strong work ethic. Throughout the interview, he talked plenty about identifying a program that will allow him to continue his development. What coach wouldn’t welcome a player with that mindset?
