The Outlet: Giant Killers
The Outlet is a weekly column that touches on various topics concerning Oklahoma high school basketball.
This week in the Outlet we will answer five questions about teams around the state who have what it takes to knock off the top dogs in their class.
Which team in 6A could knock off a top contender?
Mustang has played well so far taking into consideration that they basically lost their entire roster and coach. A team that was loaded with studs last year is now a team that a lot of people don’t keep up with.
Diego Gray and Quantrell Jackson have led a feisty Mustang squad to a 6-5 record. Their record doesn’t blow you away but they have hung close with Tulsa Union and Edmond North.
Mustang plays a slow methodical style that could throw off a contender in the early rounds of the playoffs.
What team could knock off a giant in 5A?
Bishop McGuinness is usually not an underdog but over the past couple years their have been a lot of transition going on from one class to another.
McGuinness is 5-9 so far but they have one of the best players and coaches in the class let alone the state. Mason Webb is a talented guard who can put his team on his back and pull off an upset.
What team in 4A has shown the signs of a giant killer?
Heritage Hall has moved up to 4A after having major success in 3A. Currently, the Chargers are 7-4 and they are coming off an “upset” of #4 Harrah.
Les Thomas is the best shooter in 4A plus Jon Matthews and Sayvon Milton make up one of the more talented teams in the class.
Because of their past success, these Chargers have played in big games before and they won’t be intimidated by anybody which could lead to a big playoff win early.
Which underrated team could make it to state?
Mount St. Mary’s is surprisingly ranked #13 in 4A but they are sitting on a 9-2 record and they are led by a talented 2018 guard named Stephon Hall.
Mount St. Mary’s has shooting around Hall which allows him to navigate on the perimeter with his impressive athleticism.
To make a run you need a solid roster and a player who can take over a game and the Rockets have just that.
Which player could lead his team to a big run in the playoffs?
Brantly Thompson of Tuttle is a college ready guard who has great size and the ability to run the show. Thompson leads a talented Tuttle roster who is currently ranked #20 in 4A.
Tuttle has put out some good talent recently and Thompson is at the top of that list.
