“He is actually having a great year,” said AAU Coach and Guardian Dodie Dunson Sr. “He is tearing up Central Illinois.”
According to Dunson, Farris has scored 28+ in five of his last six games. College coaches are noticing.
“He is a qualifier, but he transferred here from Wisconsin last year, so not a lot of people know about him,” said Bloomington HS Head Coach Mike Mosley.
Farris and the BHS Purple Raiders are undefeated in conference (17-3, 7-0) heading into February.
The senior guard is comfortable in those tense, late moments of games. Diving into the lane he can finish over help defenders now and certainly at the next level.
A rival coach, Normal Community HC Dave Witzig told The Pantagraph Farris’ 33-point effort January 20th “probably the best individual game a Bloomington player has had against us” in 22 years.
College Aspirations
An angular guard, Farris is drawing interest from Loyola, Monmouth (D2), Bradley, Wabash JC, and John A. Logan.
“Bradley told me they will take another look at him,” said BHS Coach Mosley.
Coach Mosley is trying to push Illinois State too.
Dazon Farris began his basketball lessons in central Illinois.
“I think the biggest thing is him playing D1,” said Dunson. “He transferred back here. We had him since first grade. We weren’t thinking academic-wise where he would be at, but he is a full qualifier.”
One geographical outlier has entered the picture.
“Cal-Poly is going to fly in pretty quick here,” said Coach Dunson. “There is a difference between the West Coast. Fundamentals are stronger than California at the guard spot. The mental toughness that we have…that is the reason why a lot of west coast coaches like our players.”
Don’t look for Dunson to take any campus visits in February. He and his supporters welcome game evaluations and will keep the dialogues open until Bloomington’s promising season wraps in March.
“We are going to do make some unofficial visits after the high school season,” said Dunson. “I believe Bloomington has the potential to make the state tournament.”
Dazon Farris’ teammate Chris Payton (#10 2019) is attracting region-wide attention.
The 2019 forward is certain to add to his Illinois State offer in the months to come. Together Payton and Farris intend to play deep into March.
Farris played well in previous playoff pushes. This one will be embedded in his memory for a lifetime.
