Continue ReadingLakeville North put together a decisive victory over Robbinsdale Armstrong last night to win the even they hosted. The Panthers improved to 6-1 on the year.
MVP: Trevor Schermann. The lift Trevor gave his team was huge and it came in so many ways. He had four or five assists (note pad error so not sure which), intelligent passer, defensively everywhere in the right spot, chased down nine boards, scored his 15 points on only eight field goal attempts. Loved the way he played the 6-foot-4 worker role as a wing and I think he would fit in that role with many MIAC teams.
Best Offensive Performance: Nathan Reuvers. The Wisconsin signed big had his 29 points on 10 of 14 shooting from the field, 8 of 9 shooting from the foul line. Also grabbed nine boards and physically had four blocks too. Offensively though the Falcons could not deal with his skilled size and once again he was scoring actively off the ball too.
Best Defensive Performance: Schermann. He’s the type of guy that can make a massive impact and not need stats. His effort in help, fight around screens to get to the right spot, battle through the post and in the post, footwork, it’s all there and it’s consistent.
Best Guy Off the Bench: Spencer Fossey. Fossey came off the bench hitting a three and scoring seven points on three shots. He’s a 5-foot-9 dependable reserve guard.
Best Under the Radar Performance: Ethan Igbanugo. After a quiet first half Ethan was huge in half two scoring a dozen and sinking key free throw sets at the line. Did a nice defensive job on Isaiah Rollins in half one and then scored himself in half two.
Best Underclassmen: Tyler Wahl. Wahl has turned a corner. He’s just playing more confidently and is much more active without the basketball. Tyler gave the Panthers ten points and five boards and he’s reading defenses better allowing him to get to space to help his team.
Best Story to watch Moving Forward: Falcons Getting some Ws. Robbinsdale Armstrong is 2-3 but they are a team playing a lot of new guys in the rotation and their first five games included defending champ DeLaSalle, defending runner-up Lakeville North, and top ten Tartan. Tough initial task against veteran teams with so many new faces in the line-up. This team will beat the teams they should and as their players get more experience they will beat some of the bigger names later in the year.
Best Aspect of the Environment: College Coaches. Richard Pitino and assistant Ben Johnson of Minnesota were at the game and received a lot of “good luck coach” and “nice job coach” comments from the crowd.
Best Prospect: Race Thompson. Thompson gave the crowd a corner three, a putback dunk, a face-up ten footer, 15 points total, nine boards, some assists, and a decent game. Thompson would of wanted to shoot better as he made 6 of 19 looks but he will improve off of this.
Other: Armstrong Guards. Isaiah Rollins actually helped get this game down to eight points late as he scored 10 of his 12 later. Rollins is coming off a big game against Northfield from a day earlier. Davonte Saeed-El scored a team high 22 points slashing to the rim. He was a guy that the Panthers let the ball get rotated to from Thompson and Rollins and Saeed-El used that space to shoot 8 of 13 from the field. Both are senior guards.
