Two years ago in the finale of the Genesis Shootout, Rock Island’s Tyler Hall had a ridiculous performance to lead his team to a win over North Scott. Tonight, it was United Township’s Tray Buchanan who had his own ridiculous showing, scoring a career high 34 points as the Panthers knocked off Bettendorf, 50-48, in front of a packed Roy J. Carver Center at Augustana College.
Bettendorf was in command for much of the evening, despite the fact that Buchanan was going crazy. They held a four point lead with 1:51 to play after a Mark Kallenberger bucket gave them a 48-44 edge. Those would be the last points the Bulldogs would score, as United Township closed on a 6-0 run to win. It started with a pair of Buchanan free throws. Then, as the Bulldogs were trying to run out the clock and avoid UT fouls, they turned it over with a double dribble, giving UT the ball back with 17 seconds to go. Tray Buchanan did his thing and knocked down the go-ahead 3 with 3.0 to play. Bettendorf committed a foul fighting through the screen and Izaya Sims got a to shoot a pair. He went 1-2, giving UT a 50-48 lead. The Bulldogs turned it over on the ensuing inbounds, and that was all she wrote.
Bettendorf (4-2) was led by Mark Kallenberger with 13 points and seven rebounds. J. Michael Young had 10 points, nine rebounds and four assists, and Suni Lane had eight points and eight rebounds for the Bulldogs.
Scoring
Team | 1Q | 2Q | 3Q | 4Q | F |
Bettendorf | 16 | 14 | 4 | 14 | 48 |
United Township | 14 | 8 | 12 | 16 | 50 |
Bettendorf: Mark Kallenberger 13, J. Michael Young 10, Dylan Clearman 9, Suni Lane 8, Joe Martens 4, D.J. Carton 2, Justin Hutter 2
United Township: Tray Buchanan 34, Izaya Sims 9, De’Ante Walker 5, Thomas Hughes 2
MVP: J. Michael Young
The calming influence in the Bulldogs’ backcourt, they have to be ecstatic to have him back in the lineup. He was able to penetrate the UT defense a few times and get to the rim, while also showing a nice mid-range game and knocking down a 3. He finished with 10 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
Best offensive performance: Mark Kallenberger
The Iowa football commit scored a team high 13 points on 6-7 shooting and pulled down seven boards for the Bulldogs. He was particularly effective early in the first half, establishing good early position in possessions and finishing in the paint.
Best defensive performance: D.J. Carton
It was an up-and-down night for the sophomore guard, but I thought he had some really good moments on the defensive end, including a very impressive block on De’Ante Walker at the rim in the third quarter.
Most telling statistic: 18 turnovers
Bettendorf committed 18 turnovers, none more meaningful than the one that put the ball back in Tray Buchanan’s hands with 17 seconds to play.
Story to watch moving forward: The turnover problem
You can’t turn it over 18 times in a game like this and contend for a state title. Bettendorf must clean that up, and quickly.
