Despite averaging 24 points on sterling shooting, and 6.2 rebounds per game through his team’s first five games this season, it seems that football will be Van Whye’s best bet in college.
“I play four sports; football, basketball, track and baseball. Right now I think the plan is for me to play college football, that’s where I’ve gotten the most attention and the highest attention,” said Van Whye. “So as of right now I’m doing that, but I’m still open to play anything.”
The linebacker is seeing dome Division I FCS interest, and has one offer from South Dakota State. He’s seeing some lower level interest for hoops.
“I got a few letters for basketball last spring, but it kind of stopped after that. I’d probably say football is my favorite sport,” he said.
“It’s (playing football in college) close to set in stone, but not quite.”
Regardless of which sport he ultimately decides to play in college, the fact remains that he’s a menace to opponents on the hardwood.
“My strength is scoring the ball, specifically by attacking the basket. And if things start going well for me attacking, then I can step back and get some jumpers to go,” said Van Whye, who is equally adept at playing down low or on the perimeter.
“It just depends on the match up; if I have a smaller guy on me I’ll go down low, but if I have a 6’6 or 6’7 guy on me I’ll go outside.”
Off to a great start to his senior season, he’d trade in some of those stats for some more wins — his Lions are just 1-4 in the early going.
“I knew coming into the season I’d have to score a lot of points for us because I was our only returner,” said Van Whye. “I feel like I’ve done that, but as a team we just need to step up on the defensive end, and that’s when we’ll start seeing more wins.”
