MVP: Marvin Johnson Ed North
This was Marvin’s first game in the Huskies uniform and his athleticism was on full display. There may not be a better forward in the 2017 class at slashing to the paint and finishing above the rim. Johnson was active in North’s zone and his energy created offensive putback opportunities.
North has never had a player quite like Johnson and his combination of size and athleticism could be a key factor in a state championship run for the Huskies.
Best offensive performance: Marvin Johnson Ed North
Johnson was one of the few players for North who got it going by getting out on the break. Johnson is the type of player you don’t want to give opportunities to get the crowd going with dunks. In the half court, Johnson did a great job of catching the ball and immediately driving to the rim.
Best defensive performance: Will Boyd Ed North
Boyd is an underrated component of Ed North’s loaded roster. Boyd plays extremely hard and it showed as he got two breakout dunks created by his great defensive instincts.
At 6’5, Boyd is a sneaky athlete and he covered a lot of ground defensively which caused some of Ed Memorial’s struggles.
Best post performance: Harrison Stoddart
Stoddart didn’t get many touches in the Huskies first game. Stoddart is an excellent shooter but he missed his few opportunities from deep. However, Stoddart showed his great hands while rebounding and catching passes above his head. Stoddart is a skilled big man who showed he can effect a game even when his offense isn’t going.
Best passer: Marques Wilson Ed North
Wilson struggled in the first half trying to find his shot but he adapted and began to find his teammates which is when North started to find some rhythm offensively.
Best player off the bench: Carlos Coppage Ed North
In his first appearance in a Husky uniform, Coppage came off the bench and he played a solid game in which he got his offense going in the second half. Coppage used his floater to get in the lane and finish over the athletic forwards for Ed Memorial.
Best story going forward: Edmond North chemistry
North struggled to find rhythm in their first game but it will be interesting to see how the rotation starts to mold and take form. The Huskies have a lot of talent and it is just a matter of time until they get things rolling.
Edmond Memorial will be fine. They are young and they may take their lumps this year but they have a talented and feisty core of players who will develop throughout the season.
