Player Spotlight: Will Yoakum (2017)
Prep Hoops Ohio caught up with Delaware-Hayes’ Will Yoakum to talk about the early basketball season and his commitment to NCAA Division II powerhouse West Liberty (WV).
Delaware-Hayes is off to a 3-3 start. “The season is going well thus far. We are 3-3 but we are competing at a very high level, trying to get better every game,” said Yoakum, who is currently averaging 17 points per game.
Yoakum plays the wing position primarily, but is capable of playing the point guard position when needed. “I feel like I can score in a variety of ways. I use my length and athleticism on both sides of the floor, especially in transition.”
This past summer Yoakum played with the King James Ohio varsity AAU program. “We played great competition and I had great teammates. I thought I performed on a high level and feel like I proved myself to a lot of people.” During the off-season, Will worked a lot on improving his physical strength and his overall game. “I was in the gym everyday.”
Yoakum committed to the West Liberty (WV) Hilltoppers earlier in the month. West Liberty is home to the 2014 NCAA Division II championship runner-ups. “The winning culture and their playing style were factors in to my decision. I really liked the coaching staff and players, as well.”
Will says his goals for his last season of high school basketball are, “to be a leader and a role model and to also just to simply enjoy everything. I’ve truly been blessed with great teammates, coaches, and community throughout my four years at Delaware.”
