You know what you’re going to get from Pleasant Valley. They’re going to slow the game down considerably, be extremely patient on the offensive end, and then defend the heck out of you on defense. It’s a tried and true method that has worked well for the Spartans over the years. It worked again on Saturday afternoon, as the Spartans beat Galesburg (IL) 44-27 at the 23rd annual Genesis Shootout. The win gives Iowa a 3-1 lead in the seven-game event.
A first half that featured a combined 30 points was dominated by Pleasant Valley, who had a 19-11 lead at the break, but with their methodical style and defensive abilities, you can almost double any lead they have. Brian Dayman had 11 points for the Spartans at the break, as many as Galesburg had as a team, as PV forced nine Silver Streaks turnovers in the first 16 minutes.
The second half was more of the same – a suffocating defense paired with an offense that excels at the rim. Pleasant Valley led by as much as 17 as they cruised to a win.
Brian Dayman led Pleasant Valley (3-3) with 20 points and 11 rebounds. He went 10-11 from the line in the win. Trevon Montgomery and Hunter Snyder each had eight points and the Spartans held Galesburg to 27% shooting in the dominant defensive performance.
Scoring
Team | 1Q | 2Q | 3Q | 4Q | F |
Pleasant Valley | 12 | 7 | 8 | 17 | 44 |
Galesburg | 6 | 5 | 11 | 5 | 27 |
Pleasant Valley: Brian Dayman 20, Trevon Montgomery 8, Hunter Snyder 8, Caleb Carius 6, Carter Duwa 2
Galesburg: Jacob Ross 11, TJ Pendleton 11, Andrew Anderson 5
MVP: Brian Dayman
The only Spartan in double figures, Dayman was dominant around the rim for PV, finishing with 20 points and 11 rebounds. The long, physical combo forward scored all of his points either at the paint or the free throw line, dominating a smaller Galesburg lineup.
Best offensive performance: Brian Dayman
Dayman went 5-10 from the floor and got to the free throw line a bunch, going 10-11 from the stripe. He’s a very good finisher around the rim, using his size and strength to finish through contact.
Best defensive performance: Trevon Montgomery
The long, athletic wing has long been known as a standout defender, and this game was no different. He’s very good both on and off the ball, and is sensational when defending ball screens. The Spartans have no problems throwing him on whoever the opposition’s standout scorer is, as with his size, he can defend any spot at this level.
Play of the game: Hunter Snyder runs baseline, drills a 3 off the catch
There wasn’t anything spectacular about this play, just a pretty bit of offense. Snyder started in the right corner, ran the baseline off a pair of screens, and caught, squared and released a 3 in one motion. Splash. The sophomore wing has a lot of potential, and will be knocking down lots of buckets for the Spartans over the next 2.5 years.
Best underclassman: Hunter Snyder
The sophomore is already a good offensive player, with the ability to score in a variety of ways, and a very good shooter. He’s long, athletic and disciplined. Lots of upside here.
Stat of the game: Galesburg shoots 27.0%
Always one of the best defensive teams in the state, Pleasant Valley put the clamps down yet again in this one, holding Galesburg to just 27% (10-37) from the floor in the win. With their length and discipline on the defensive end, they’re tough to beat unless you’re able to get the ball to the rim, or get them sped up on the other end of the floor. Once they’re set in their halfcourt defense, good luck.
