A huge effort from Rock Island, Alleman’s Nathan Graves (27 points, 12 rebounds) led to a 56-50 loss at the Genesis Shootout for Davenport West on Saturday afternoon.
Despite holding Alleman to just 34.8% from the floor, the Falcons were unable to overcome a huge disadvantage at the free throw line, where Alleman went 20-27 (compared to just 6-11 for the Falcons). Graves was a big part of that, going 13-15 at the stripe en route to his 27 points.
After falling behind 27-23 heading into the locker rooms, West used a big 15-6 third quarter to take a five point lead into the fourth quarter. However, with big man Brett Erwin and point guard Kenny Clay both saddled with foul trouble, the Falcons were unable to slow the Pioneers in the fourth quarter. Once Erwin fouled out with a little over four minutes remaining, the floodgates opened and Alleman secured the victory to tie the Shootout back up at one game for each state.
West (2-4) was led by Kenny Clay, who had 13 points and seven assists. Brett Erwin added 11 points and seven rebounds, and Dylan Hansen had eight points for the Falcons.

MVP: Brett Erwin
The Falcons big man was saddled with foul trouble for much of the afternoon, but still was able to finish with 11 points and seven rebounds in 17 minutes of action. He was starting to really come alive in the third quarter, scoring six straight to help West build their lead, before his fourth foul put him on the bench for a while. Once he fouled out with a little over four minutes left in the game, the floodgates opened up for Alleman, with no interior protection.
Best offensive performance: Kenny Clay
The 5-8 point guard was a dynamo, especially early on for the Falcons. He had a very impressive first quarter, scoring seven points and showing some creativity with his finishes around the rim. He quieted down a bit after that, as he too as hampered with foul issues, but still finished with 13 points and seven assists.
Best defensive performance: Trey Sampson
He was only credited officially with one block, but I had him with at least three. He helped provide some rim protection and with his athleticism, he was able to cover a lot of ground for the West defense.
Best player off the bench: Mason Carney
The 5-9 sophomore guard came off the bench to give West five points, three steals and four assists, providing a spark for a unit that desperately needed someone else to step in and contribute.
Story to watch moving forward: Can West’s young guards provide enough help for Clay, Erwin and Sampson?
The Falcons got some solid production out of sophomore guards Mason Carney and Victor Howard in this one. That will need to continue if they want to make any noise in the MAC, as Kenny Clay, Brett Erwin and Trey Sampson could use some additional pop to help take some of the pressure off them.
