Midwest City, Edmond North, Edmond Santa Fe, Putnam City North and Lawton Ike are all ranked inside of the top ten of their class. Not to mention Jenks and Edmond Memorial are within the top 15 in Class 6A.
Get an in-depth preview of each team, players to watch and predictions.
Edmond North
The Huskies are stacked this year with Marvin Johnson and Carlos Coppage joining a great returning nucleus that includes Marques Wilson, Harrison Stoddart and Will Boyd. Johnson is one of the most athletic wings in the state. Coppage does a great job coming in off the bench giving Edmond North another quality ball handler. Wilson is a sharp shooter with a college ready body. In the paint Stoddart gives the Huskies a shot blocker and he has the ability to stretch the floor with his shooting. Boyd is an under the radar role player off the bench with size. One other player to keep an eye on is Jakari Holmes at the Point. Holmes has made vast improvements over the last year.
Jenks
The Trojans are not as talented as they have been in years past. Cole Surrett is the player to watch in the paint with his great size and ability to finish around the rim. They don’t necessarily have the one player you have to game plan for, which also works in their favor. Jenks will have the chance to surprise teams with a great showing this weekend. The opening game will be tough for Jenks with Edmond North slated to face them. After this weekend a new face could emerge from Jenks as a player to watch.
Lawton Ike
This weekend Lawton Ike has the chance to prove they belong in the conversation at the top of Class 5A. The Eagles drew a good first round matchup with Edmond Memorial, but if they are able to beat them they would face Edmond North more than likely. There is no dodging the spotlight this weekend at the Edmond Open. Romio Harvey lead the attack for the Eagles on the wing. RJ Fisher is Lawton Ike’s Point Guard running the show. Harvey and Fisher will need great weekends for the Eagles to have a chance to win the Edmond Open.
Edmond Memorial
The Bulldogs are very young, but have talent that Coach Cowherd is shaping and molding each day. Players to watch out for include Drew Tennial, Peyton Roberson and Steven Payne. A senior to keep an eye on is Marlik Depp who is undersized in the paint, but works his tail off to have success. Edmond Memorial is a team that will probably be on the outside looking in at the Class 6A state tournament, but don’t be surprised when they go on a playoff run.
Putnam City North
The Panthers are sky high coming off a huge win against Putnam City West last week. But the Panthers could hit a wall this weekend if they are not careful. Putnam City North will get tested in each round of the Edmond Open. Adokiye Iyaye and Micah Thomas combine for one of the best backcourts in the state. Blake Owens is a 6’7 post inside that has great leaping ability to alter and block shots. Over the past year Owens has improved steadily. Putnam City North moved inside of the top five in Class 6A this week. The Edmond Open will give them a chance to prove they belong in the top five.
Edmond Santa Fe
The Wolves have tons to prove early in the 2016-2017 campaign. So far. So good. However, Edmond Santa Fe has three tough games in front of them at the Edmond Open. This is the weekend Edmond Santa Fe could make a huge statement. Players to watch for Edmond Santa Fe include Tauriawn Knight, DeAngelo Adkins and Kristoff Hayden. Knight is a dynamic young guard with tons of upside. Hayden and Adkins are the senior leaders for the Wolves. Adkins has grown three inches since last year. He has also grown and matured his game on the court. This will be an interesting weekend for Edmond Santa Fe.
Midwest City
The Bombers have nearly all of their talent from a year ago back and better. Keyshawn Embery is on another level this year for Midwest City. Derrick Walter Jr. has stepped up this year becoming a reliable second piece in the Bombers offense. Midwest City will need Walter to continue to come up clutch behind Embery. Jalen Redmond is the X-Factor for Midwest City in the paint. If Redmond gets in foul trouble the Bombers are in a world of trouble. Embery, Walter and Redmond make one of the best trio’s in the state. It will be a disappointment if Midwest City does not win the Edmond Open this weekend.
Casady
Casady is the wild card of the tournament this weekend. Omar Boone runs the show for Casady at the Point. Because they are not in the OSSAA not many are aware of Casady and how talented they are as a program. Boone is a spectacular scorer and will have a chance to showcase his skills against some of the best in Oklahoma starting with Midwest City on Thursday night.
