The Huskies showed why they are ranked so high in the 6A coaches poll. During the Edmond Open, North highlighted three reasons why they can win it all this year.
Quality Guard Play
Carlos Coppage is has fit in well for an already loaded roster at North. At the Edmond Open, Coppage did a great job of setting up his three point shooters. Coppage came up big for the Huskies in the fourth quarter as he got steal and break away layup to stop the Bombers momentum.
The biggest shot of the game was Coppage hitting an open three with under two minutes left to put the Huskies up four points.
Marques Wilson was a tough matchup for all his defenders at the Edmond Open. In the championship game, Wilson had a great second half as he scored consistently in the painted area. The Lehigh commit ended the game 14 points and a handful of assists.
Edmond North’s guard play was vital in winning the Edmond Open championship and it will also be key in the pursuit of a state championship.
Productive Size
Harrison Stoddart was on fire in the first half against MWC. The 6’7 forward hit three shots from long distance and ended up with 13 points in the first quarter. Stoddart used to be a big man who could only shoot but he has evolved into an all-around player who can rebound and defend the rim.
The Oklahoma Baptist commit ended the game with 21 points and had a key put back layup late in the game to help win the Edmond Open Championship. Stoddart’s skills is such a huge weapon for the Edmond North and it is one of the pieces that makes the Huskies so dangerous. Andrew Stuman also adds quality size to the talented front court of Edmond North.
Will Boyd is one of the most underrated players in 6A. He is a sneaky athlete who can finish above the rim. With Boyd in the starting lineup the Huskies have great size 2-4.
Marvin Johnson’s versatility
There is no other player similar to Marvin Johnson in 6A or in the state for that matter. Johnson is 6’5 and can handle the ball like a point guard. He is one of the best around at finishing at the rim. Johnson can guard all five positions defensively and he is a terror to stop in transition.
What Johnson showed throughout the Edmond Open but specifically in the championship round is that he can dominate against the best competition. Johnson had an excellent game against MWC as he scored 11 points in the third quarter. The 6’5 forward finished with 22 points on the day and he displayed elite versatility.
Edmond North has never had a player like Marvin Johnson walk their hallways and if he continues to play the way he did this past weekend then the Huskies will have a great chance of holding up the gold ball in March.
