Sioux City East: One of the those programs that always seems to be among the state’s best, Sioux City East is certainly one of them this season. Aidan Vanderloo and Van Rees are stars, and Jailen Billings was a welcomed addition from Sioux City North. The Black Raiders have started the season 5-0, and came away with a tough win over a good Sergeant Bluff-Luton squad last Friday.
Cedar Rapids Kennedy: The Cougars have established themselves as one of 4A’s top contenders after an impressive 5-0 start to their season. Senior Drake Brewster and junior Derrick Diggins have led the charge, both have been outstanding. And it hasn’t been a weak schedule either, Linn-Mar and Dubuque Senior have all fallen victim to Kennedy this season.
Dallas Center-Grimes: Not a lot was expected of the Mustangs this winter. After all, they lost their three leading scorers from a season ago. But guys like Trevor Grove and Steve Borneman have stepped up big and the Mustangs have raced out to a 6-0 start, and with some quality wins to boot (Norwalk, Newton).
Down
ADM: We had high expectations for ADM coming into the season, mostly because they had one of the more talented backcourts in all of 3A with Tajen Ross, Payton Conrad and Matt Larson. But it’s been tough sledding so far for the Tigers, and their 2-3 start has been much less than ideal.
Cedar Rapids Washington: The Warriors are another team we had some expectations of this season. But after a sluggish start was followed by the departure of star point guard Hunter Strait (Ankeny Centennial), they’ve hit rock bottom. After a 1-0 start, they’ve dropped five straight, by an average of 27 points.
Waterloo Christian: Yes, they currently have the state’s third leading leading scorer with Luke Zwack (30.3 ppg), but that doesn’t mean near as much if there’s no wins coming in. The Regents have started 0-7 this season. Their closest game was a 13 point loss to CAL, Latimer.
