He decided to leave the state after last season because he was dissatisfied with what he perceived as a lack recruitment.
“Last year I wasn’t really satisfied with my recruitment, so my dad and I decided it was time to get out of there. So around May we started taking visits to schools and somebody told my dad that there was a guy coaching at a school in Virginia who was from Kentucky,” said King.
“So we went to visit there and things just worked out, and here I am.”
After spending his summer with Louisville Magic, King started to see a spike in his recruitment.
He picked up his first offer in June.
“I was offered by Samford, that was my first offer,” said King. “And I picked up a lot of interest over the last live period; UNC-Wilmington, Central Florida, Georgia Southern, Radford, Kennesaw State and a bunch of schools.”
He visited Samford on an unofficial shortly after the offer, and he liked what he saw.
“I really liked it,” he said. “Their coach says he wants to do something big there, and I like that they are playing really big teams; they played Louisville last year and they’re playing Florida State this year, and that’s something I want to be a part of. I plan on taking another visit sometime soon.”
King says the other schools are mostly in contact with him indirectly.
“It’s been a lot of text messages and letters from the other schools, they’ve been contacting my dad more than me,” said King.
“But I’m just trying to play. I’m not really worried about the recruitment part because that will come with it.”
As he gets set for this season of high school hoops, King is focused on proving that he’s become a versatile threat, able to play in the paint and on the perimeter.
“Mainly I’ve been working on my perimeter game and being more aggressive and making moves to the basket, because in college I want to play the three and the four. So I’ve mainly just been working on my shot and my handles,” said King, who is pretty lax with the whole recruiting process right now.
“I really want to see if I can pull out a high-major offer, and I’m just working just to keep doing what I’m doing. I don’t really have a timetable on when I”m going to make my decision. I’m not really worried about it right now.”
