Cochran, who stands 6’5 at 185 lbs, participated in the annual Blue-Chip/High Potential Basketball Camp at Georgetown College this summer. While there, he fascinated many with his overall skill and athleticism, which included a 2nd place finish in a heavily talented dunk contest and an opportunity for his team to play in the semifinal game of the camp’s final day tournament.
Coaches who participated in the event were impressed with his inside/outside abilities. At 6’5, Cochran runs the floor like a guard with the ability to post and finish around the rim like a big man. In most games, he was relied on to be a post presence early, having the ball dumped down to him and finishing around the basket while also forcing defensive help from the corners or wings for kick out opportunities. When his team needed a basket, he was relied on to drive and get to the rim in spread offense situations.
Charlie has a unique ability to take any player off the dribble. If a guard is defending him, he can shoot over his man or force his will toward the rim. If a big is defending him, his quick first step allows him to attack and leave his man behind. Charlie also shoots it like a stretch four, knocking down two to three 3’s per contest. Colleges who were there to watch Cochran participate at the event included Georgetown College, Centre College, Asbury University, and Alderson Broadus.
During his junior season playing for Louisville Seneca, Cochran averaged 10.1 points per game, shooting 48% from the field. He also averaged 6 rebounds per game.
He’s already making an impact at Collins. In their scrimmage against 2nd Region power Hopkinsville, Cochran scored 19 points, shooting 8-10 from the field while grabbing 13 rebounds in a 68-66 win.
You can catch Charlie Cochran in Collins’ first game of the season at home in Shelbyville, December 2nd against 6th region’s Bullitt East Chargers.
