14th REGION
STATE CONTENDER: PERRY CENTRAL (54TH DISTRICT)
Throughout most of the 2015-2016 season, Perry Central was the favorite to take home the 14th region crown. Leading up to their regional final loss to Buckhorn, Perry Central was undefeated in the region. Returning three starters, the Commodores look to be the favorite during the 16-17 campaign as well. 6-4 forward Damon Tobler, a D-I caliber player, returns for his senior season. Tobler nearly averaged a double-double last season in points (14 ppg) and rebounds (9). Returning in the backcourt are guards Noah Back, a sophomore, and senior Ausin Hill. Perry Central will also get help from two impact transfers in 6’7 forwards Princewell Anosike and Idris Akinyemi.
NEXT TO CONTEND:
Letcher Central returns one of the state’s top scorers in Torrell Carter. Carter averaged 26 ppg last season. Considered one of, if not the best player in the region, Carter hopes to help Letcher Central build off it’s 21-10 season from last year.
Knott Central finished the season 11-14 last year but don’t expect the same win/loss numbers this year. Returning senior guard Austin Combs, who averaged just over 17 points per game last season, the Patriots are geared up for another run at the state tournament. Knott Central also returns junior guard Isaac Caudill, who also averaged 17 points per game last season.
Breathitt County will be powered by senior returnees Jordan Barnett and Ethan Little. Little, a consummate floor general, averaged 12.1 ppg last year. Barnett averaged nearly a double-double with 9.8 points and 9 rebounds per game last season.
