Outlook: Gates County basketball flew under the radar last season while managing to finish with a 23-5 overall record. In a tough Coastal 10 1A conference, they went 17-1 during the conference play. Much of their success was due to a steady contribution from current junior forward Dontrell Watford and senior guard Robert Walker. Despite losing several key seniors, the future looks bright. The junior varsity went 18-1 (16-0 in conference) and had several call-ups that should be able to fill in nicely alongside Watford, Walker and a slew of other young varsity returners.
Junior standout Dontrell Watford has been the leading scorer, rebounder and blocks leader for Gates County varsity team since his freshman season. As a sophomore averaged 15 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals and 1 block for Gates. The burly 6’1” forward can put the ball on the floor, create space inside and has explosive leaping ability. He’s a huge matchup problem night in and night out. Should pick up some college interest this season. Undersized, but dynamic forward.
Alongside Watord, 6’0” senior guard Robert Walker is the second leading returner scorer at 10 points per game. 6’5” sophomore post Nathan Leary and 6’2” junior Gage Riddick will provide rebounding and interior presence. 5’8” sophomore junior varsity call-up Jawaun Riddick could be primed to see good minutes at the point guard position.
Gates County plays in a strong Coastal 10 1A conference that currently has Plymouth HS, Ocracoke, Perquimans HS and Camden County in competition.
