Continue ReadingBlake Owens is the best power forward in the Oklahoma 2018 class but with his size and potential he could end up becoming one of the top overall players in the state. The 6’7 forward’s combination of athleticism and perimeter skills have caught the attention of coaches at the next level.
Owens is everything you think of when you envision a power forward in today’s game. He can shoot from the perimeter but he the ability to slash to the basket like a guard which a lot of perimeter forwards can not do.
Owen’s realizes that a few of his biggest strengths can create mismatches. “Agility because big men can’t guard me or I’ll go by them,” Owens said. “Also shooting because it spreads the floor more and it makes big men have to guard me on the perimeter.”
A lot of big men who can shoot fall in love with the long ball and start to float around the perimeter which drastically hurts their team with getting second opportunities to score.
The Putnam City North transfer is not opposed to getting inside and banging on the glass even with his small frame. “I’m good at getting second shots and helping my teammates get more shots,” Owens said. Rather it is on the offensive or defensive glass, Owens is attacking the rebound with two hands.
Ball handling and putting on more weight are specific areas Owens wants to improve this year.
P.C. North has a ton of talent and possibly the best backcourt in the state. Now they add a player like Owens who came from Piedmont can make them even more dangerous as they look to improve on a State Tournament run last year.
This new Panthers team had some time to play together this summer and Owens is the chemistry that has been built so far. “We played great in the summer and I feel like as a unit we all mesh together very well together,” Owens said.
Owens is a 2018 prospect who will get more exposure playing with PC North and he will build on a strong summer with EYBL Nike Team Griffin.
So far Owens has gained interest from a few smaller Division I’s like Kennesaw State and Texas A&M Corpus Christi and local Division II’s like Oklahoma Christian.
Owens has the size, ability, and potential to eventually be able to play at the lower DI or bigger DII level.
