Putnam City West returns a large nucleus from their state championship team a year ago. The Patriots only lost two players, Marquis Johnson and Issac Leggins, both were starters. If you asked me today what team is the favorite heading into the year Putnam City West would be my answer. Lenny Bert has tons of talent to work with this season and always has his players ready to play. Gerren Jackson will be the leader of the Patriots at the Point. He is one of the most under the radar player in the 2017 Oklahoma Class. George Price moving to Putnam City West will give the Patriots instant offense at the guard spot.
With that said Edmond North is making a very strong case to be the favorite entering the season. Marques Wilson and Harrison Stoddart return with a good group of role players from a year ago. Marvin Johnson and Carlos Coppage will have huge impacts moving from Ardmore to Edmond North. Wilson and Johnson are top 10 players in the 2017 Oklahoma Class. Terry Evans will have Edmond North ready to avenge their loss in the state semifinals a year ago.
Can Midwest City finally break through to the state tournament this season? Keyshawn Embery, Jalen Redmond, Derrick Walter Jr and company came up a game short of the state tournament with two close losses to end the season. The Bombers will have to replace Richard Anderson, but for the most part Midwest City returns a great nucleus. Midwest City no longer has the excuse of they are young. This appears to be the breakout year for Midwest City.
As for the East side of the state there will be two powerhouse programs that are back and ready to compete for the Gold Ball. The Union Redskins have the best Post duo in the state in Ethan Chargois and Adrian Rodriguez. The biggest question for Union is what guards will step up this year to help get the ball to the two big fellas down low? Don’t be surprised when Union is back at the state tournament making a deep run after the Gold Ball. Union won the state championship Chargois and Rodriguez freshmen year. The duo will look to win another ring, but this time with them leading the charge.
Booker T. Washington is loaded with talent across the board. RJ Fuqua leads the way for the Hornets at the Point with a great balance of scoring and precise passing. This season the Hornets will have the addition one of the best 2018 prospects in the state, Jaycson Bereal. On the Wing Bereal is a freak athlete with big time potential to turn into a high major college prospect.
As long as Norman North has Trae Young the Timberwolves will be a team to watch. Don’t be surprised to see Young lead the Timberwolves back to the state tournament. Young could average 40 points per game this year with the loss of Marcus Dickinson, Cameron Martin and Lindy Waters.
Another team to watch in Class 6A is Yukon with the addition of Martin in the post. He will bring a presence that makes the Millers tough to stop. Yukon will need their guards to step up to make a state tournament run.
Putnam City North has several move-ins that will make them a strong contender for the state tournament. Adokiye Iyaye comes to North from Piedmont. He is one of the top 2018 players in the state. Iyaye will surprise the state with how good he is on both ends of the floor. Micah Thomas is a young 2019 prospect that will make his name known.
Westmoore has a chance to be the surprise of the Class with Will Graham returning at Point Guard. Graham is an under the radar Point Guard with the ability to put the ball through the hoop. Damoriea Vick is an intriguing Wing player that has developed into quite a prospect. The Jags have a chance to turn some heads this season.
On the east side of the state a few sleeper teams are Sapulpa, Sand Springs, Muskogee, Owasso and Broken Arrow. All have a chance to sneak up this year and make the state tournament. Sapulpa has some young talent with Julian Smith and Trey Phipps.
Broken Arrow is loaded with talent at the Guard spot with Caleb Huffman, Camryn Dennis and Tony Hall.
Owasso seems to always put together a strong squad on the court. The Rams will be led by Josh Procter at shooting guard. Sand Springs has the impressive trio of Colt Savage, Brooks Haddock and Kyle Keener. The Sandiness should have a great chance to make a run at a state tournament bid.
Don’t forget about Edmond Memorial and Edmond Santa Fe. The Wolves return a plethora of talent. Norman and Putnam City are likely not a state tournament teams, but will be improved.
