The top position in Oklahoma without question is the Point Guard spot. Prep Hoops completes the analysis of each position in the 2017 Class with the Top Ten 2017 Oklahoma Point Guards.
1. Trae Young Norman North 6’2
The number 1 Point Guard in the state is not even a question. Young very well might be the best Point Guard in the entire country. He proved his elite status to another level this summer leading MOKAN Elite to win the NIKE EYBL Peach Jam. Young is down to six final schools Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas Tech, Kansas, Kentucky and Washington. Young is a three-point sniper that has improved his game over his career turning into an elite passer with brilliant vision.
2. Elijah Landrum Tulsa Central 5’10
Landrum is an elite scoring guard with tons of upside. This July Landrum shined at NIKE Peach Jam with MOKAN Elite and at the Elite 8 in Vegas. Landrum has official visits to SMU, Stephen F. Austin, VCU, Florida International and Tulsa is also in the picture. Landrum is a great shooter from the Point Guard spot with tons of athleticism.
3. RJ Fuqua Booker T. Washington 5’10
If you are looking for the most clutch player in Oklahoma RJ Fuqua would be the player. He has hit over 10 buzzer beaters in his high school career. Fuqua is best at being a true Point Guard that does a great job of getting everyone involved. This summer Fuqua shined on the Under Armour Circuit showing off his overall complete game at the Point. Fuqua is being recruited by several schools including Oral Roberts, UMKC and Houston Baptist.
4. Burke Putnam East Central 6’2
Putnam is one of the best Point Guards in Oklahoma, but many are not aware of his talents. Several Division I programs are showing interest in Putnam. He is a jack of all trades at Point Guard. One of the things that instantly jumps out is his willingness to do what ever is necessary to give his team the best chance to win. Putnam plays tough defense and is arguably one of the top defenders in Oklahoma. On offense Putnam does a great job of getting to the basket and finishing in traffic. Putnam has improved as an all-around Point Guard big time over the past year.
5. Caleb Nero Tulsa Memorial 6’2
Nero is a Point Guard that excels with the rock in his hands. At the 1 Nero is a volume shooter with a knack for putting the basketball in the hoop. Nero can score in all three phases of the game. Crafty would be a great way to describe Nero’s game at the Point. He is sneaky athletic at times with good lateral movement on defense. Nero has a couple of Division I offers with UMKC and UNC Greensboro both extending offers. He is one of the most all-around talented players in the 2017 Oklahoma Class with the ability to play at the 1 or the 2. Nero is listed as a Point Guard because he plays at his best with the ball in his hands.
6. Gerren Jackson Putnam City West 6’1
Jackson is a player with so much upside at Putnam City West. Last year with the clock winding down and Putnam City West trailing by one point he hit the game winning bucket to give Putnam City West a Class 6A Championship. Jackson is athletic with good vision and feel for the game. Defenders struggle to stay in front of Jackson. Over his high school career Jackson has improved his jumper. East Central University has offered Jackson a scholarship. Expect more to come as his senior year continues.
7. Stefone Richardson Edison 6′
Richardson is a gamer on the floor with the ability to play the 1 or the 2. Prep Hoops lists him at the 1 because he thrives with the ball in his hands. This summer Richardson was very efficient in his time on the floor on the Under Armour Circuit. Richardson is hearing from several Division I programs. At the Point Richardson is best at creating offense, finding open shots and making timely plays. Richardson will look to lead Edison back to the State Tournament in his senior season for the Eagles.
8. Omar Boone Casady 5’11
This summer Boone had a solid showing on the NIKE EYBL scoring the basketball well from the perimeter. He has a nice drive to the basket with his speed giving defenders trouble. Boone is undersized, but does a great job of finding ways to make plays. He looks to have a great year at Casady in his final year. Boone has proven he can play at a high level at the Point. Keep a close eye on his recruitment this fall as things will likely heat up.
9. Callen Haydon El Reno 5’10
Haydon is a scoring machine with deceptive speed. He can score the ball in all three phases of the game. At his best Haydon has the ball in his hands creating open looks from behind the arc and mid-range. The deceptive speed he has makes it hard to stay in front of him. Haydon has an offer from St. Gregory’s with interest from several Division II programs.
10. Cameron Hines Fort Cobb 5’10
Hines is a witty Point Guard with a great overall game. He is not the most athletic or fast, but does a great job of not letting that hinder him from making plays at the Point. Hines currently holds offers from Arkansas Monticello and East Central. The high IQ Hines possess makes him a great fit at Division II schools. He distributes the ball at a high level. One thing most do not realize is he has a sick crossover that allows him to get open for shots. Hines will be one of the most heavily recruited Point Guards in the 2017 Oklahoma Class by Division II schools.
