Martin committing makes him the forth Oklahoma prospect to commit to a Division I college the 2017 Class. Prep Hoops caught up with Martin to see what made Jacksonville State the perfect place for him?
“They see me as a player that can come in as a freshmen and contribute to the teams success,” said Martin. “I loved the family atmosphere and how much the coaches believed in me as a person and a player.”
Martin stands at 6’9 at the Center spot. He suffered a tough knee injury midway through the high school season last year at Norman North, but toughed it out and played on a hurt knee in the playoffs. The Timberwolves came up just short losing at the buzzer in the Class 6A State Championship game.
“It was really hard having to play hurt last year,” said Martin. “It is never fun playing at only 60% but I wanted to be there for my teammates and compete for a Gold Ball. Even though we came up a little short I don’t regret any of it.
Playing through the pain during the high school season cost Martin his final summer of grassroots basketball.
“The hardest part about it all was hearing about everyone playing all summer,” said Martin. “Guys traveling to places to play basketball and me not being able too. It just makes you love the game even more.”
Sitting out this summer taught Martin a valuable lesson that he will never forget for the rest of his basketball career.
“Being hurt and having to miss out taught me to never take basketball for granted because one day you will play your last game,” said Martin. “You will never realize how much you love it until it is gone.”
Martin will bring instant toughness and size to the Jacksonville State roster. At the 5 he is a great rebounder with the toughness to finish through traffic. Late in July Martin was cleared to play again. In the Prep Hoops Finale July 31st weekend Martin looked healthy and good on the court. This year Martin will play his final year of high school hoops at Yukon.
The last time Martin was at Yukon was his sophomore season. Martin will look to dominate the Oklahoma basketball scene in the paint. He will have a chance to lead Yukon to the State Tournament for the first time in quite some time.
