2017 Best Available Shooting Guards
#8 Caleb Simmons 6’5 SG Desert Vista – Simmons is the top SG in this class due to his length, athleticism, and skill set. He is capable of playing the 2 or the 3 in college. Simmons is a capable shooter, but prefers to attack the rim and does a good job of putting himself in positions to be successful. He crashes the glass well and uses his length to his advantage. Currently, Simmons is a mid to low NCAA Division-I prospect.
#15 Bryce Fowler 6’4 SG Agua Fria – Fowler has average quickness but far above average basketball intellect. He is a very smart player who rarely makes mistakes. He knows his role and plays it extremely well. He provides length on the offensive and defensive end and is a strong shooter from deep. In addition, he is good at keeping his body low to the ground when driving so that he does not get bumped off his spot. Fowler is a low NCAA Division-I, high NCAA Division-II, or high NAIA Division-I prospect.
#24 Keith Holmes 6’2 SG Desert Ridge – Noah Baumann has committed to SJSU; thus leaving Holmes as the next best prospect available in the 2017 class at Shooting Guard. Holmes does a lot of things really well and has improved the consistency of his shot tremendously. He drives the lane well and plays really smart basketball. Furthermore, he gives a lot of effort and does all of the little things coaches love that impact games.
#42 Jake Lieppert 6’3 SG Saguaro – Lieppert can flat out score the basketball. He is a top tier shooter who is also capable of putting the basketball on the floor. Although he does not have the height of some of the other prospects in this class, he is a versatile guard who can play the combo guard. Lieppert is a solid NCAA Division-II or NAIA Division-I prospect at this time.
#43 JT Thoman 6’1 SG Chaparral – Thurman is a tremendous athlete who possesses a lot of strength. In fact, he is so versatile that he decided to play football at Chaparral has had success. He has a solid vertical and can shoot the basketball at an above average rate. He is also capable of using his strength to get the defender on his hip and finish in an array of manners.
#45 Trevor Thompson 6’2 SG Moon Valley – Thompson can fill it up quickly. Thompson might end up being better suited to play more of a point guard slot as he prefers to have the basketball in his hands, and he does a really good job of shooting off of the dribble. With that said, he is definitely capable of running the wing and shooting off of the catch.
#47 Jared Irwin 6’3 SG Catalina Foothills – Irwin has decent length for a two guard, a solid handle to the point where he might be able to play some point in college, and a deadly shot. He is more comfortable shooting off of the catch than off of the dribble; thus making him more suited to play the 2 at the next level. With that said, there is no question that Irwin can play at the next level. He is a talented prospect who is capable of scoring in an array of ways.
#49 Jeff Perez 6’0 SG Apollo – Perez is a knockdown shooter who plays tough defense. In addition, he does all of the little things that are asked of him at Apollo. He plays relatively mistake free basketball and plays his role as the catch and shoot 2 guard better than almost any other shooting guard in the state.
#50 Adam Wright 6’0 SG McClintock – Wright is a good athlete who can create for himself and teammates in the paint. His shot is getting more and more consistent as well. Wright will have a much bigger role this next season for McClintock as the team looks to replace its two leading scorers from last season. Look for Wright to step up huge in this effort.
#56 Nick Rosquist 6’0 The Gregory School – Rosquist is one of, if not the, top shooters in the class of 2017. He averaged almost 26 points per game last season while connecting on over 3 three pointers per game while shooting the ball at a little under 40% from the 3. He is a confident player who is willing to let others create for himself as well as create for himself. He can fill it up quick and get into a great rhythm where it feels as if he is throwing the basketball into the ocean.
