His interest is still light, and the recruitment process is still early, but Penny was able to name four local programs which have expressed some level of interest. And one out-of-state Division I program.
“I have Bellarmine, Kentucky Wesleyan, Georgetown, Pikeville, and my coach has been in contact with Evansville,” said Penny, who elaborated on the Evansville contact.
“My coach reached out to Evansville for me. He says it’d be a good school for me, and a good fit for my point guard skills.”
Penny says he enjoys playing point guard more than shooting guard, and he explained his playing style to PHKY.
“I like bringing the ball up the floor more than being the two guard,” he said. “I love ball-screens and can step-back and shoot it a little bit — but I’m mainly a driver.”
He played with Hoop Dreams 16U this spring, and says he was playing well until he was injured just before the summer.
“I was their point guard, they needed one really bad,” said Penny. “I was our third-leading scorer and then I tore my meniscus and was done for the summer.”
He’s back now, and ready to start prepping for his junior season. It’ll be his third season starting with the varsity.
He averaged 22 points, 5.5 assists and 6 rebounds per game as a sophomore.
“I’ll still be our team’s leader mostly,” said Penny. “And then I just want to take my team to state.”
