The Hornets are dangerous not only because their talent but also their depth. 2017 Point Guard Aaron Lucas adds to that depth and plays a significant role for his ball club.
Lucas stands a bit on the shorter side at 5’9” but plays much bigger than he looks. He has elite speed that he uses to get baseline to baseline in the blink of an eye. He has a tight handle and does a great job of limiting mistakes. Lucas can also be lethal from deep when he slides over to play two guard.
Defensively Lucas has the ability to get underneath an opposing guard and defend the full length of the court. He fills in perfectly behind star point guard and game manager R.J. Fuqua.
Although he had a big summer with Oklahoma Run PWP Select, Lucas says he takes a different heading to his final high school season.
“I’ve really just been working on building a solid and consistent jump shot,” said Lucas. “Ball handling, finishing through contact, and working on my legs to dunk are all things that I’ve worked focused on this offseason.”
Strengthening those attributes and having so much talent around has Lucas’ expectation for himself and his team on the high side.
“I want to come into this season and be a big defensive threat and an offensive threat,” said Lucas. “I plan on averaging 20 a game. Then I really do feel like we have a great chance at winning state. Team wise, I need to be an advocate for my teammates and a strong point guard. I believe it’s really important for me to be a leader because we have a really great team that’s young.”
One thing that schools can like about Lucas his ability to be a leader vocally and by example. Once he steps on a college campus and buys into the system a coach has in place, he will spend a lot of tome making sure his teammates are all on the same page.
Lucas has picked up a hand full of interest from schools instate and abroad. Langston University, University of Central Oklahoma, Roger State University have all reached out to Lucas in hopes of starting the recruiting process.
He is projected as a Division II or NAIA prospect who could make an impact on the floor immediately.
