A 6-foot-4 wing from Mayfield, Guthrie is more a slasher than he is a shooter, but he says he’s ready to evolve into more of a complete guard and diversify his game.
“I like to drive a lot, and I don’t really shoot a lot of 3s, I need to work at that more. I rebound really well for my position, and I get a lot of steals. And I run the floor well in transition,” said Guthrie.
“I need to work on my left-hand more, and my jump-shot.”
He spent his spring and summer playing with Pocket City 15U, and says the experience playing both point guard and wing was invaluable.
“I thought I played well, and I proved that I belonged out there with them,” said Guthrie. “I played really well on defense, I led the team in steals. I played on the wing and played point guard a lot, and was comfortable doing that.”
Last season as a freshman at Mayfield, Guthrie was named to the all-district team. This season he’ll look to up his production, and be the leader of the Cardinals.
“Last year I started the season as a starter, and I was in and out of the starting lineup later on. I ended up leading the team in scoring and rebounding,” said Guthrie. “My sophomore year, coach is looking at me to be the leader of the team, and to run the point and run our plays for us.”
