Most of us live a life based on repetition and once you find the right pattern to life it can be hard to tinker with it the slightest bit. Imagine, coming off a state championship and continuing your basketball career with the most talented young core in the state and then life happens. This is the reality of former Carl Albert point guard Bryce Mooreland.
Mooreland and the Titans put together a memorable performance in the Class 5A State Championship game last season. A 56-54 victory had Carl Albert sitting on top of the world and had many thinking more state championships were in the making.
Due to family reasons Mooreland must now walk away from Carl Albert and the potential ahead of them. He is now enrolled at Norman High School and is looking to make major moves with the Tigers in Class 6A.
“When I found out I was going to be going to Norman I obviously had mixed emotions,” said Mooreland. “I did some research and found they only won three games last year. That’s a big difference knowing that at Carl Albert we only lost two games. It just makes me just want to start the season right away and show people I can help turn things around so I’m very excited.”
Mooreland burst on to the scene with the Titans last year and has shown consistency throughout the summer to improve upon his play. He is a speedy point guard with all the tools to be a true floor general. He has the quickness to blow by defenders in the half court but could do a better job of seeing the floor and making plays for others. His three point shot has fallen with consistency as his overall game is starting to come together.
Expectations aren’t particularly high for the Tigers this season but Mooreland has aspirations of bringing Norman back into contention.
“For the team I really feel a realistic goal for us would be to win 15 games,” said Mooreland. “I’d like to make the state tournament and after that anything is possible. For myself I would like to get a D1 scholarship first and then lead the team in points, assists, rebounds, and steals.”
Mooreland spent a majority of his childhood not only at Carl Albert but with former teammates Mason Harrell and TreyVon Hopkins. The trio had been playing hoops and various other sports together since third grade. Mooreland says it will definitely be tough leaving behind his brothers.
“It was extremely hard to leave knowing we had a chance at two more gold balls,” said Mooreland. “Leaving Trey and Mason will certainly be hard but they understand me and my family’s situation and want what’s best for us. I appreciate the memories I made at Carl Albert but now it’s time for me to embrace my future at Norman.”
It’s certainly an uphill battle for Mooreland and the Tigers in Class 6A which will be as competitive as ever before. But with a point guard who can score and distribute the way Mooreland can, things are trending upward for the Tigers.
